Embryos derived from mutant females have a small number of apparently polyploid nuclei, rather than the normal, large number of diploid syncytial nuclei.
Embryos derived from homozygous females undergo a few mitoses before the nuclei over-replicate. These embryos contain up to 64 nuclei (76.3% contain 1-5 nuclei, 19.8% contain 6-16 nuclei, 3.4% contain 17-32 nuclei and 0.4% contain 32-64 nuclei).
