Females from germline clones with Hsf1 produce no or droplet eggs.

Heterozygous larvae reared in a regimen of alternating hypoxia and reoxygenation show a greatly reduced survival compared to heterozygous larvae reared in normoxia (in contrast to wild-type larvae, which show no significant difference in survival between the two rearing conditions).

No eye abnormalities are seen in Hsf1/+.

Homozygotes arrest at the 1st or 2nd larval instar stage and die after 2-3 days without any further growth or development. Viability is rescued in homozygous or hemizygous Hsf2/Df(2R)PclP2 flies carrying Hsf+t8. Homozygous clones induced after the larval lethal stage give rise to viable populations of cells that form normal structures in the adult. Homozygous clones induced before the larval lethal stage give rise to normal structures in the abdomen, but are not recovered in the head and thorax. Females mosaic for homozygous clones in the germ line are sterile. These clones produce egg chambers which contain a single oocyte and the normal number of 15 nurse cells, but are arrested at a pre-vitellogenic stage. The DNA content of the nurse cells is somewhat lower than normal.

One copy of Hsf1 enhances the eye morphology and lifespan defects seen when Zzzz\Poly-AlaA37.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP-EGFP,T:SV40\nls2 is expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4ey.PB.
