red1/Df(3R)Exel6267 and red1/Df(3R)BSC487 flies show both the eye and Malpighian tubule coloration of red1 homozygotes.

Eye colour: dark brown. Malpighian tubule colour: red (larvae and adults).

Pigment of Malpighian tubules are ommochromes.

Eyes contain less drosopterin and isoxanthopterin and more of the other pteridines than normal. Eye color autonomous in red1 eye discs transplanted into wild-type host. Wild-type Malpighian tubes acquire some red pigment after transplantation into red1 hosts.

RK1. Malpighian tubule colour: rusty red. Malpighian tubule colour: colourless, with v1. Malpighian tubule colour: colourless, with cn1. Eye colour: brown, darkening with age.
