Additional information regarding the mapping of the red Malpighian tubules (red) locus
Lydia Cook and Kevin Cook
Breen and Hart (1991; FBrf0054607) showed that red (FBgn0003228) maps between trx and su(Hw). We have seen that red1 fails to complement Df(3R)Exel6267 and Df(3R)BSC487. Flies showed both the eye and Malpighian tubule coloration of red1 homozygotes. The proximal breakpoint of Df(3R)BSC487 subdivides the three-gene (CR45596, CG12207 and CG3259) interval between trx and Su(Hw) interval and these complementation results indicate that CR45596 cannot correspond to the red locus.
Flies carrying Mi{ET1}CG12207MB04082 (FBti0078242) and red1, Df(3R)Exel6267 or Df(3R)BSC487 had normal Malpighian tubule coloration. red1/Mi{ET1}CG12207MB04082 flies had normal eye color. These results indicate that the recessive lethality of the Mi{ET1}CG12207MB04082 chromosome in Bloomington stock 24672 is not caused by the insertion itself, but do not allow us to conclude anything about the relationship of CG12207 (FBgn0038220) and red, since we do not know if the intronic Mi{ET1}CG12207MB04082 insertion affects CG12207 function.
