Expression of ctLS enhancer trap lines in a Kr1 or Kr9 mutant background demonstrate that the Malpighian tubule cells are transformed into a structure consistent in appearance and cell number with a change in cell fate to a hindgut. ct expression in the Malpighian tubules is greatly reduced.

gt expression domains are extended towards the centre.

Kr9 homozygous embryos show extensive deletions in the region between T1 and A5.

Strong segmentation phenotype. Homozygous embryos do not differentiate Malpighian tubules. The hindgut is larger than wild-type.

Segments T1 through A5 are deleted and replaced with a mirror image duplication of segment A6 in homozygous embryos.

The thoracic and five abdominal segments are deleted, and replaced by a mirror image duplication of abdominal segment 6. The Malpighian tubules are missing.

Strong allele. Segments T1 to T3, and A1 to A5 are deleted.
