Description

Insertion of a full length gypsy element within the 3' untranslated region for all f transcripts in the same orientation as the f gene.

Includes a total of two gypsy inserts, one in the second intron and the second in the 3' flanking sequences.

A member of the right hand group of alleles; contains two gypsy inserts, one which is similar or identical to that of f1 and the other which is closer to the SalI restriction site (1.2 kb); orientation is the same. In addition f5 contains a 4.4 kb insert in a restriction fragment to the left of that carrying the f1 gypsy insert; it is located approximately 4.7 kb to the left of the reference SalI site (McLachlan, 1986).

Larvae exhibit an intermediate bristle phenotype within the denticles of all rows.

Strong f bristle phenotype. Bristle phenotype is under the control of a second site modifier.

strong - macrochaetae and microchaetae strongly gnarled suppressed by su(f) suppressed by su(Hw)2 RK1

f1 su(f)2/f5 su(f)1 females show suppression of the f mutant phenotype similar to that seen in f1 su(f)1/f5 su(f)1 females at 24-25oC. At 20-30oC, the f1 su(f)2/f5 su(f)1 combination shows suppression of the f mutant phenotype but bristles are Minute-like.
