Comment:

Arg codon is CGG in reference strain and CGC in reported sequence (FBrf0080055). A CGC to TGC change is presumed to account for the reported R162C change in aurA3 (FBrf0144945). The same nucleotide change would cause a R162W mutation in the reference strain. The reduced kinase activity of the mutant is thought to be due to the mutation of this conserved Arg in the ATP binding pocket in subdomain I of the catalytic domain. Two other nucleotide changes were reported in the aurA3 mutant (not including an observed polymorphism). Site of nucleotide substitution in mutant inferred by FlyBase based on reported amino acid change.

aur3/aur87Ac-3 embryos have a reduced number of pole cells compared to controls and the pole cells that do form often have greatly reduced germ plasm.

In embryos from aur3 mutant mothers, the astral microtubules at the spindle poles during mitoses are short and reduced in density compared to wild-type.

rlSu14 and Dsor1Su1 have no effect on the mutant phenotype.

Larval brain neuroblasts have wild type mitotic figures in homozygotes. aur3/Df(3R)T-61 larval brain neuroblasts show a low but significant number of abnormal, polyploid, mitotic figures.
