Df(3R)Hsp70A, Df(3R)Hsp70B mutants are viable and fertile. Df(3R)Hsp70A, Df(3R)Hsp70B flies show the same susceptibility to heat paralysis, following pretreatment at 35oC for 30 min, and testing at 39oC, as Df(3R)Hsp70A flies. Df(3R)Hsp70A, Df(3R)Hsp70B flies rarely survive a heat shock treatment of 35oC 30-min pretreatment, followed by incubation at 39oC for 45 min, while almost 75% of wild-type flies survive this treatment. This reduction in viability can be partially rescued by expression of two copies of the P{FRT(whs,3Xwt70).A} transgene. When this treatment is repeated without the pretreatment, one-third of wild-type flies survive, while almost no Df(3R)Hsp70A, Df(3R)Hsp70B flies survive. When larvae are subjected to a heat shock of 30 min at 37oC, there is very little difference in survival between Df(3R)Hsp70A, Df(3R)Hsp70B and wild-type flies. This treatment causes development delay in both the mutants and wild-type flies, but the developmental delay is longer in the mutants. A pretreatment of 35oC for 30 min nearly eliminates the delay in wild-type larvae, but had no effect on the delay in the mutants. Heat-shock puffs persist much longer in Df(3R)Hsp70A, Df(3R)Hsp70B larvae than wild-type larvae in response to treatment at 37oC for 25 min. Df(3R)Hsp70A, Df(3R)Hsp70B flies are unaffected by pretreatment at 35oC for 30 min followed by 40 min at 38oC.
