lacZ expression is driven by a 4.0kb EcoRI fragment which includes 3.4kb of the Mef2 5' flanking region and 0.6kb of (non-protein coding) exon 1.

Reference

Reporter gene expression is first observed in the ventral mesoderm at the late cellular blastoderm stage. During germband extension, it is expressed at high levels in all of the precursors of the visceral and somatic musculature and later throughout the differentiated muscles. No expression is observed in the dorsal vessel.
