Other Information

Recombinant between Dp(2;2)Su(Pm) and bwD that displays variegated eyes (a weaker variegated phenotype than Dp(?;2)bwD). Consists of bwD in the proximal site of the duplication and bw+ at the distal site. Heterozygotes with bw1 exhibit 10-fold higher pigmentation level compared to Dp(?;2)bwD/bw1 heterozygotes. Byron also has the advantage over Dp(?;2)bwD that PEV does not require pairing of homologous chromosomes. Heterozygotes with Dp(?;2)bwD exhibit intense orange-variegated eyes. Byron/Df(2R)bw5 individuals exhibit enhancement of the variegated eye phenotype (~2% pigmentation). This evidence supports the para-inactivation model to fully account for effect of bwD on bw+ in the Byron duplication causing the eye phenotype.
