Recombinant between Dp(2;2)Su(Pm) and bw^D that displays variegated eyes (a weaker variegated phenotype than Dp(?;2)bw^D). Consists of bw^D in the proximal site of the duplication and bw⁺ at the distal site. Heterozygotes with bw¹ exhibit 10-fold higher pigmentation level compared to Dp(?;2)bw^D/bw¹ heterozygotes. Byron also has the advantage over Dp(?;2)bw^D that PEV does not require pairing of homologous chromosomes. Heterozygotes with Dp(?;2)bw^D exhibit intense orange-variegated eyes. Byron/Df(2R)bw5 individuals exhibit enhancement of the variegated eye phenotype (~2% pigmentation). This evidence supports the para-inactivation model to fully account for effect of bw^D on bw⁺ in the Byron duplication causing the eye phenotype.
