    Detailed Description

EatoMI14571 homozygous as well as Eatof02254/EatoMI14571 mutant stage 14 egg chambers show nurse cell clearance defect and contain on average 6 persistent nurse cell nuclei, while in wild-type egg chambers all the germ-line derived nurse cells have undergone programmed cell death and been cleared by this stage. St.14 egg chambers containing EatoMI14571 germ-line clones do not show significant clearance defects.

Similarly, EatoMI14571/Df(2L)BSC812 mutants exhibit defects in engulfment of nurse cells by the follicle cells during starvation-induced programmed cell death: While phase 0 and phase 1 egg chambers resemble the control, in phase 3 eggs their follicle cells show fewer engulfed Dcp-1-positive vesicles and by phase 5 the dying mutant egg chambers display severe engulfment defects and follicle cell death, leaving behind completely unengulfed germline.

    Reference

The nurse cell clearance defect observed in EatoMI14571 mutant stage 14 egg chambers (which contain persistent nurse cell nuclei, while in wild-type egg chambers all the germ-line derived nurse cells have undergone programmed cell death and been cleared by this stage) is, surprisingly, ameliorated by ABCAmir-1007-KO homozygosity, even though it strongly exacerbates this phenotype in Eatof02254 mutant egg chambers.

The nurse cell clearance defects characteristic for drprΔ5 mutant stage 14 egg chambers are not significantly exacerbated by combination with EatoMI14571 in homozygous state and both drprΔ5 single and EatoMI14571;drprΔ5 double mutant egg chambers display on average ~9 persistent nuclei. However, EatoMI14571 homozygosity does further impair the nurse cell engulfment defect seen in stage 14 egg chambers expressing Ced-12HM05042 under the control of Scer\GAL4GR1.
