    Detailed Description
    Statement
    Reference

Egg chambers containing homozygous germline clones do not develop beyond stages 8 and 9 of oogenesis, due to degeneration and apoptosis of germline cells. Defects in ring canal morphogenesis are seen, ranging from an almost complete loss of ring canals to the formation of small, rudimentary ring canals connecting two nurse cells, to the formation of unusually large ring canals connecting a nurse cell with the oocyte. The growth of ring canals connecting two nurse cells is arrested at stage 5 in the mutant germline clones, whereas the growth of ring canals connecting a nurse cell to the oocyte continues until stage 8 in the mutant clones. The oocyte nucleus is misshapen in homozygous germline clones (the phenotype is fully penetrant after stage 7), being enlarged and elongated compared to the round and compact nucleus seen in controls. Germline cells with more than one nucleus (particularly the oocyte) are also seen.
