ScerGAL4Gr66a.1.8 drives expression in adult abdominal multidendritic neurons with with dorsal processes extending along the left-right axis, as well as in multidendritic neurons with lateral processes extending anteroposteriorly; these major processes have several protruding dendrites. Additionally, expression is driven in laterally localized multidendritic neurons with extensive arborization. Expression is also observed in projections to the abdominal ganglion.

ScerGAL4Gr66a.1.8 is expressed in gustatory neurons of the bitter-sensitive short labellar taste bristles, and in gustatory neurons of all of the intermediate labellar taste bristles.

ScerGAL4Gr66a.1.8 is strongly expressed in almost all of the short and intermediate taste sensilla of the labellum.

ScerGAL4Gr66a.1.8 drives expression in 6 gustatory receptor neurons of the larval terminal organ, two of these having its cell body in the dorsal organ ganglion (TO-dorsolateral group). All 6 neurons co-express ScerGAL4Gr33a.4.7. One of the neurons of the TO-dorsolateral group also expresses ScerGAL4Gr10a.3.7 and ScerGAL4Gr32a.3.7.PW. The other terminal organ neurons express different combinations of drivers. The first neuron expresses ScerGAL4Gr32a.3.7.PW, ScerGAL4Gr28b.e.4.245, ScerGAL4Gr39a.a.3.4, ScerGAL4Gr39a.b.1, ScerGAL4Gr59d.4.1, ScerGAL4Gr9a.6.3, ScerGAL4Gr22e.2.5, ScerGAL4Gr22a.4.2, ScerGAL4Gr28b.a.3, ScerGAL4Gr36b.0.9, ScerGAL4Gr36c.2.5, ScerGAL4Gr58b.1, ScerGAL4Gr59a.1.5, ScerGAL4Gr59c.5.5 and ScerGAL4Gr93b.5.3. The second neuron co-expresses ScerGAL4Gr39a.a.3.4, ScerGAL4Gr57a.6, ScerGAL4Gr59d.4.1, ScerGAL4Gr47b.2 and ScerGAL4Gr94a.3.7. The third neuron co-expresses ScerGAL4Gr57a.6 and ScerGAL4Gr97a.1. The fourth neuron expresses ScerGAL4Gr39a.b.1 and ScerGAL4Gr59d.4.1. Expression of ScerGAL4Gr66a.1.8 is also found in two neurons of the dorsal pharyngeal sense organ (DPS or epiphysis), two neurons of the posterior pharyngeal sense organ (PPS or hypopharyngeal sense organ) and in two neurons of the ventral pharyngeal sense organ (VPS or hypophysis).

Inhibition (using Hsap\KCNJ2IVS.10xUAS.EGFP) of Scer\GAL4Gr66a.1.8 cells in adult females does not affect preference for softer 100 mM sucrose-containing agarose for egg laying, compared to controls.

Optogenetic activation (using Cnoc\ChR1::Csub\ChRCsChrimson.IVS.20xUAS.Venus with 617 nm (red) light) of Scer\GAL4Gr66a.1.8 cells, or the combination of Scer\GAL4Gr66a.1.8 and Scer\GAL4nompC.PC cells, in adults results in induction of proboscis retraction due to stimulation during feeding, compared to controls.
