Mutants stall in metamorphic development between 3 and 6 hours after puparium formation. Gas bubble migration is stalled in these animals. Homozygous third instar larvae lack mature imaginal discs and the optic lobes of the brain are drastically reduced in size. A mature imaginal ring in the anterior gut is absent in the mutant larvae and there is a reduction in the imaginal rings of the hindgut and salivary glands and in the cells of the imaginal midgut islands. The number of cells in the anterior dorsal, posterior dorsal and ventral histoblast nests is normal in the mutant larvae. Females containing homozygous germline clones produce very few eggs, all of which fail to hatch. The mitotic index is increased more than threefold compared to wild type in homozygous third instar larvae. The frequency of prometaphase figures is also increased and the chromosomes are highly overcondensed. Aberrant anaphase figures with lagging chromosomes are seen. Overall spindle morphology and centrosome positioning appears normal.
Homozygous lethal. Homozygotes show an arrest in development during the prepupal period.
