Description

The klgruslan mutation results from an insertion of a P{GAL4} transposon in the first exon (+97 bp), oriented in the opposite direction to klg transcription.

Detailed Description

1-day memory after spaced training is disrupted in homozygous klgruslan and heterozygous klgruslan/klgE226 flies.

Homozygous klgruslan mutants show increased sensitivity to ethanol vapor compared with controls. klgruslan mutant flies also show reduced rapid tolerance to ethanol. Whereas control flies exhibit a reduced behavioural response following pre-exposure to intoxicating levels of ethanol, klgruslan mutant flies exposed to either ethanol or air produce a similar response. Chronic tolerance is also reduced; unlike in controls no change in behavioural response is seen following overnight pre-exposure to a low concentration of ethanol (never reaching intoxicating levels).

In memory tests, mutants perform at 91% of wild-type after a single training session, at 31% after spaced training.
