Expression of neurαRING.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 causes vein thickening, ectopic campaniform sensilla, and loss of wing margin. Coexpression of neurScer\UAS.cLa rescues this phenotype.

Expression of neurαRING.Scer\UAS when driven by Scer\GAL4sca-537.4 in proneural clusters leads to strong tufting of all macrochaetes and a mild increase in microchaetae density. When neurαRING.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4neur-GAL4-A101 in the sensory lineage can lead to a partial shaft to socket transformation or fully double-socketed structures. When neurαRING.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4Bx-MS1096 a severe loss of wing margin is seen along with a strong serrated phenotype. A single copy of this construct can result in nearly wingless flies. Nevertheless in the remaining wing portions, venation is only mildly thickened. Large numbers of campaniform sensillae are seen unevenly distributed all over the wing vein L3. When a single copy of neurαRING.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4VMQ, wings display a mild truncation of wing vein 5. Homozygotes display thickened veins and a strong loss of wing margin.

When a single copy of neurαRING.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4GMR.PF, adults exhibit a rough eye phenotype. Mild ommatidial disarray and tufting of interommatidial bristles are seen. When three copies are present, eyes contain regions of bristle tufting and balding as well as areas of strong ommatidial fusion. In the eye discs of these developing flies a mild disruption in photoreceptor patterning is seen, whereas the large majority of ommatidia contain four cone cells. When one copy of neurαRING.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4ey.PS in the eye only minor defects are seen in the overall appearance of the eye. However misexpression of two copies leads to a dramatic reduction in the size of the adult eye. However the corresponding eye discs are wild-type in size. The eyes appear to have undergone significant neural hypertrophy - neurαRING.Scer\UAS appears to have a dominant-negative activity with respect to lateral inhibition of photoreceptor fates.

neurαRING.Scer\UAS; Scer\GAL4GMR.PF flies have rough eyes. The wings of neurαRING.Scer\UAS; Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 flies have many ectopic L3 campaniform sensilla, along with a thickening of wing vein L3 and a notch in the distal tip of the wing margin. The additional presence of neurScer\UAS.cLa completely suppresses the vein thickening and notching phenotypes, and partially suppresses the formation of ectopic campaniform sensilla.
