scolopidial cilium & Johnston's organ
scolopidial cilium & pentascolopidial chordotonal organ
rempA1 mutants show no ciliary transport (anterograde or retrograde) in Johnston's organ chordotonal neurons, as compared to controls.
Hemizygous adults lack antennal sound-evoked potentials.
Cilia in the scolopidia of the pentascolopidial chordotonal organ end in the scolopale in homozygous larvae, at about half wild-type length (the cilia extend through the scolopale and into the distal extracellular caps in wild-type scolopidia).
The cilia in the antennal chordotonal organ are truncated in mutant adults and the ciliary dilation, which is normally present at about two-thirds the length of the cilium, proximal to the dendritic cap, is absent.
Flies are uncoordinated showing frequent leg crossing and wings held up or out. Walking and righting ability is impaired. Spontaneous or induced (by light or mechanical stimuli) activity is vigorous. The sound evoked response (measured via the antennal nerve) is eliminated. ERGs are normal.
rempA1 is rescued by rempAVenus
rempAk12913 and rempA21Ci-1 each fail to complement the behavioural and viability defects of rempA1.
