When ectopically expressed by a strong Scer\GAL4arm.PS line (arm-GAL4), UbxIa.Scer\UAS.T:Hsim\VP16 generates a range of phenotypes. Individual denticle morphologies in T2 and T3 appear normal though the numbers of denticles are reduced. T1 develops without the characteristic patch of beard denticles. In contrast to ectopic UbxScer\UAS.cCa, the remaining T1 denticles have a T2-like morphology. The head segments fail to involute and remain external and T2-like denticles are generated ectopically in these head segments. High doses of UbxIa.Scer\UAS.T:Hsim\VP16 can also suppress the formation of the Keilin's organs. When ectopically expressed by a weaker Scer\GAL4arm.PS line (arm-GAL4r), UbxIa.Scer\UAS.T:Hsim\VP16 still retains the ability to specify T2-like denticles. T2 and T3 denticle belts remain wild type, T1 beard denticles are reduced, and the remaining T1 denticles at the anterior border of the segment are fewer and smaller. Some of these denticles in T1 now resemble T2 denticles. The partially involuted head segments develop ectopic patches of T2-like denticles. This phenotype of UbxIa.Scer\UAS.T:Hsim\VP16 driven by Scer\GAL4arm.PS resembles that of Antphs.PHTA.

UbxIa.Scer\UAS.T:Hsim\VP16 driven by a weak expressing line of Scer\GAL4arm.PS (arm-GAL4r), in a Antp25 mutant background, displays a normal Antp loss of function phenotype. When driven by a strong expressing line of Scer\GAL4arm.PS (arm-GAL4), the Antp25 is rescued almost to wild type; T2 and T3 are rescued to their normal appearances, though some head segments develop small patches of T2-like denticles.
