Homozygous adults have no gross morphological abnormalities. These adults do not live for long after eclosion under crowded conditions in competition with wild-type siblings. Homozygous larvae show a reduced response to ethyl acetate, isoamyl acetate and propionic acid in an olfactory assay compared to wild-type or ana1; ana+mEa larvae. This olfactory phenotype is present by the first larval instar stage. Homozygous larvae have a significantly higher number of cells in S phase in each side of the anterior lobe compared to wild-type or ana1 ; ana+mEa larvae.
