Detailed Description

A few double heterozygotes for ash128 at 27oC exhibit haltere to wing transformation. Double heterozygotes for ash218 at 20oC or 27oC do not show homeotic transformations.

Transformation of posterior portion of haltere towards wing, loss of A1 tergite and appearance of T3 legs on A1. Ventral setal belt of A1 is transformed toward that of T3 and ventral pits appear on abdominal segments A1 to A7, inclusive.

Dominant transformation of first abdominal segment towards the third. Individuals carrying abd-A+ and Ubxbxd-51j have the complete abdominal leg phenotype, the phenotype is suppressed by two doses of abd-A.

Does not affect the frequency of the trx bithorax-variegated phenotype in heterozygous combination with Df(3R)red-P52.

Ubxbxd-51j/Df(3R)Ubx109 flies show complete loss of the first abdominal tergite, the haltere is enlarged, and there is a band of postnotal tissue in the dorsal third thoracic segment. Approximately 40% of these flies have extra legs.

ssa Ubxbx-3 Ubxbxd-51j hemizygotes do not emerge as imagos. Dissection of late pupae reveals flies have four pairs of legs (Ubxbx-3 Ubxbxd-51j phenotype) and the fourth pair of legs exhibit severe disruption of segmentation and an improvement in the segmentation of the third pair.

Comments

The phenotype of a number of combinations of Ubx mutations has been investigated to determine the role of the bxd regulatory region in the modulation of Ubx expression.
