Description

Cis-regulatory mutation.

gypsy element insertion into the bxd regulatory region. The direction of transcription of the gypsy element is in the same direction as Ubx transcription.

Insertion of gypsy element.

Insertion of a gypsy element. The direction of transcription of the gypsy element is the same as that of Ubx.

Insertion of a gypsy element.

A few double heterozygotes for ash128 at 27oC exhibit haltere to wing transformation and third to second leg transformation. Double heterozygotes for ash218 at 27oC exhibit very mild haltere to wing transformation.

Ubx1/Ubxbxd-1 transheterozygotes show a A1a to T3a transformation.

Transformation of posterior portion of haltere towards wing, loss of A1 tergite and appearance of T3 legs on A1. Ventral setal belt of A1 is transformed toward that of T3 and ventral pits appear on abdominal segments A1 to A7, inclusive.

Does not affect the frequency of the trx bithorax-variegated phenotype in heterozygous combination with Df(3R)red-P52.

Transheterozygotes with Ubx1 show an enhancement of the bx phenotype when in combination with E(bx)2. Haltere to winglike transformation is enhanced.

Different genetic combinations of Pc alleles and Ubx alleles suggest that the products of the bx region of Ubx are responsible for the "cbx" phenotype of the Pc mutations and in the absence of Pc the overexpression of bx gene products suppresses the pbx insufficiency phenotype in the posterior segments.

Homozygous flies have normal transversal fascicles in the adult CNS. Ubxpbx-2/Df(3R)P10 flies have abnormal posterior internal T3 and anterior dorsal A1 fascicles and sometimes abnormal posterior dorsal T3, and anterior internal A1 fascicles.

Ubxbxd-1/Df(3R)Ubx109 flies show complete loss of the first abdominal tergite, the haltere is slightly enlarged, and occasionally there is a thin band of postnotal tissue in the dorsal third thoracic segment. Approximately 20% of these flies have seven or eight legs.

The frequency of variegated bithorax transformations seen in Df(3R)red-P52 heterozygotes is not increased in flies also heterozygous for Ubxbxd-1.

Comments

The phenotype of a number of combinations of Ubx mutations has been investigated to determine the role of the bxd regulatory region in the modulation of Ubx expression.
