Sh6 flies treated with sodium valproate (NaVP) show a reduction in body weight, as is seen in wild-type flies. Treatment of Sh6 flies with NaVP causes an increase in mortality as is seen in wild-type flies.

Flies are significantly more sensitive to acrolein than wild-type flies.

Normal electroretinogram.

Fluunspecified Sh6 double heterozygotes hop and fly poorly compared to either single heterozygote at 29oC. Fluunspecified Sh6 double heterozygotes walk and climb normally when raised at 22oC up to seven days after eclosion. After this time there is a gradual loss of function of the mesothoracic legs, first noticeable in their lack of use for climbing. Paralysis of the legs is usually accompanied by formation of a black spot, resembling a wound reaction, at the region of the trochanter and the femoral coxal joint.
