Mutation decreases phenol oxidase activity.
Larval mouth part colour: unpigmented or have very small spots of yellow-brown pigment at the base of the mouth hooks. Mutant embryos develop into larvae that do not hatch. Larvae do not survive when released manually from the egg membranes.
Mutation is not cell lethal. In gynandromorphs the mutation autonomously depigments cuticular tissue, including chaetae.
