The testis specificity index was calculated from modENCODE tissue expression data by Vedelek et al., 2018 to indicate the degree of testis enrichment compared to other tissues. Scores range from -2.52 (underrepresented) to 5.2 (very high testis bias).
The Uro transcript is detected in the Malpighian tubules of third instar larvae and adults.
Uro transcript is expressed at high levels in mid-third instar larvae, and at low levels in early third instar larvae and in newly eclosed adults. Almost no expression is detected in other larval stages and in prepupae.

For each fully sequenced cDNA the DGRC maintains various forms of the cDNA (e.g tagged or untagged) in several different host vectors for subsequent cloning and expression in Drosophila and Drosophila cell lines.
In a sample of 79 genes with multiple introns, 33 showed significant heterogeneity in G+C content among introns of the same gene and significant positive correspondence between the intron and the third codon position G+C content within genes. These results are consistent with selection adding against preferred codons at the start of genes.

Dpse\Uro has been cloned, sequenced and compared with D.melanogaster Uro.
The cytogenetic location of Uro and five other transcripts, in a 38kb region of DNA from 28C on the second chromosome, has been studied.
Structural gene for urate oxidase (UO), the enzyme involved in the oxidation of uric acid to allantoin. Enzyme confined to the Malpighian tubules and only expressed in third instar larvae and adults. Rapid decline in urate oxidase activity in late third instar larvae attributed to the accumulation of 20-hydroxyecdysone for puparium formation; ecd larvae, when kept at 29oC, fail to accumulate 20-hydroxyecdysone and, unless fed 20-hydroxyecdysone, retain high urate oxidase activity (Kral et al., 1982).
