Description
Description
The survival motor neuron (SMN) complex is minimally composed of SMN and Gemin proteins. The SMN complex mediates the assembly of spliceosomal small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs). (Adapted from FBrf0228762).
Notes on Group

Within the melanogaster group there are differing copy numbers of the Gemin 4 gene. In the D.mel, there are three copies: Glos (Gem4a), Gem4b, Gem4c which results in the three SMN complex variant subgroups (FBrf0241402).

It was observed in D.mel that the minimal functional SMN complex is composed of only two subunits, Smn and Gem2 (FBrf0205768).

In vertebrates the SMN complex also includes the Unrip subunit.

Lanfranco et al. (FBrf0237151) suggest that Hez, Sbat and Vlet are orthologous to metazoan Gemin6, Gemin7 and Gemin8, respectively, and are components of the SMN complex. However, the data of Matera et al. (FBrf0241402) argue against this. The composition of the SURVIVAL MOTOR NEURON COMPLEX group reflects conclusions of Matera et al.
