1X flies expressing trahs.PM show male to female somatic transformation. Tumorous ovaries are seen in these animals.
At the tips of germaria of XYtrahs.PM ovaries are found apically located spherical spectrosomes which sometimes exhibit the typical tail-like structure. In more posterior regions, cells of ovaries of adult XYtrahs.PM pseudofemales mostly have branched fusome structures that connect up to 26 cells. In some cases, spectrosomes are also detected.
XY flies expressing trahs.PM develop as pseudofemales.
In XY pseudofemales, produced by the heat shock induction of trahs.PM, gametogenesis is disrupted during the cystocyte divisions, but oogenic differentiation is not induced. In XY pseudofemales, all egg chambers contain germ cell clusters with spectrosomes or fusomes. The most mature germ cells are interconnected by multibranched fusomes (polyfusomes) containing f-actin, phenotype suggestive of spermatogenic differentiation. More aberrant germ cells are also found in small (2-3 cell) clusters connected by short, poorly branched fusomes. The retention of f-actin in this subset is variable. All this indicates an early defect in the spectrosome to fusome transition that occurs at the first cystocyte division. In XY pseudofemales, aberrations are also found in the composition of the ring canals.
60% of trahs.PM XY females have large numbers of male germ cells.
X/Y; trahs.PM first instar larvae contain gonads of male size, but by the end of the third larval instar their size is comparable to that of the third larval instar. Morphology of the germ cells is male-like. X/X; tra1/tra1; trahs.PM first instar larvae have masculinized gonads, though this phenotype is variable.
At 25[o]C the sex specific muscle of female flies bearing trahs.PM allele remains male-like: failure to feminize the male specific muscle may be due to insufficient levels or inappropriate expression to make functional germ cells.
XY flies expressing trahs.PM have female somatic reproductive organs.
X[[mel]]/X[[sim]]; trahs.PM hybrids are recovered in crosses of D. melanogaster females to D. simulans males. X[[mel]]/Y[[sim]]; trahs.PM hybrids are not recovered in these crosses. X[[mel]]/Y[[sim]]; trahs.PM phenotypically female hybrids are recovered if the D. simulans male parent is carrying Dsim\Lhrunspecified.
