Germaria are severely atrophied in mutant females with only 1 or 2 egg chambers present in an ovariole. The germaria and egg chambers are full of spectrosome-containing cells or small cysts of up to 4 cells, indicating a very early arrest in development. Rarely, an egg chambers with a differentiated oocyte and multiple nurse cells is produced.
