Mutant females have egg chambers with variable numbers of germ cells per chamber, including cysts with less than 16 cells and larger cysts with more than 16 cells. Cysts with more than 16 cells have multiple oocytes and none of these oocytes are attached to more than 4 ring canals (indicating that no more than the normal number of 4 cystocyte divisions has occurred). Almost all cysts with fewer than 16 cells include a single diploid oocyte nucleus (and probably arise from a failure to complete the normal 4 rounds of cystocyte divisions).
