      Females carrying idra.hs are occasionally sterile even in the absence of heat shock. These females have bilateral agametic ovaries that lack differentiated ovarioles and developing egg chambers. Unilateral agametic ovaries are also found in females. The frequency of female sterility is increased by heat shock during embryonic stages 10 to 15.
