Description

Deficiency removing a significant portion of the SmD3 and Oda genes.

Imprecise excision of the P{lacW} insertion causes a deletion that removes most of the transcription unit and the entire open reading frame.

In a background carrying the rescue construct SmD3tVa, germ-line clones of Odalex47 induced at 2nd or 3rd instar larval stages are not recovered in the adult ovary. When the induction of clones takes place in adults, mutant germ-cells do not develop beyond stage 2 of oogenesis. Within 7 days of induction many Odalex47 mutant cysts are seen in the germaria. 14 days after induction, these mutant cysts are no longer present, but multiple degenerating egg chambers that have pinched off are.

Df(2L)guflex47 homozygotes in which SmD3 function (but not Oda function) has been rescued by SmD3+t2.3 develop into larvae whose growth is considerably delayed. These larvae are unable to pupariate. The brain, hemopoietic organs, imaginal discs and salivary glands of 12-day old mutant larvae are considerably reduced in size compared to wild-type tissues. The number of cells in the imaginal rings is less than in wild-type salivary glands. The gut, Malpighian tubules and fat bodies are nearly normal in size and shape.
