Body colour: mutant males lack deposition of black melanin in the cuticle. but the cuticle is still patterned with brown pigment.

Wild type third instar larvae move in straighter paths than homozygous yunspecified larvae of the same age. At 96 hours the tracks of mutant larvae have 10 times as many loops as tracks of wild type larvae and at 120 hours mutant larvae show bending behaviour about 2.5 times more frequently than do wild type. Consequently, they do not disperse as much as wild type larvae. Concomitant with the behavioural changes the larvae present a defect in the morphology of large chaetae in the larval denticle belts. This suggests a cuticular defect is probably involved in the abnormal locomotor activity observed in mutant larvae.

Body colour: in yunspecified t5 double mutant males, the spatial pattern of abdominal pigmentation appears similar to that of the t5 single mutant, while the intensity of pigmentation resembles that of the yunspecified single mutant.

Expression of tScer\UAS.cTa under the control of Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 in a yunspecified background produces ectopic brown pigment in the Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 expression domain of the adult abdomen in males.

Three y alleles have been induced by IR hybrid dysgenesis. They are all stable.

The frequency of yunspecified or yunspecified-f36a clones produced by mitotic recombination during larval growth is greater in flies derived from crosses of yunspecified f36a D.melanogaster females to D.melanogaster males than in flies derived from crosses of yunspecified f36a D.melanogaster females to D.simulans males.
