Ectopic expression of scrt generates extra neurons, both embryonic and adult, depending on the timing of the heat shock. Ommatidia from heat shocked eye discs frequently have eight rather than seven photoreceptor cells. Heat induction at puparium formation causes loss of macrochaetae on the thorax and head, and heat shocks at later times cause dramatic loss of microchaetae from thorax, head, legs and wing margin. Interommatidial bristles are also missing. Heat shocks as late as 15-24 hours after pupariation cause absence of macrochaetae and microchaetae on the abdomen, missing posterior crossveins and, less frequently, missing anterior crossveins.
