The cuticles of sha1 mutants display small, misshapen, multiply split denticles.
Trichomes missing or very short. Flies cannot fly or walk on glass. In larvae, the number of denticles is reduced with remaining denticles thin and bent. Hairs are largely absent, but sensory hairs not affected. Autonomous in nuclear transplants. Causes disoriented and abbreviated hairs on larval cuticle; useful as a larval-cuticle marker.
