Mesoderm cells invaginate normally in mutant embryos, but they fail to attach to the ectoderm and do not spread out, instead remaining as a tight aggregate which extends into the interior of the embryo. At later stages, some mesoderm cells are attached to the ectoderm, but many mesoderm cells remain aggregated and they never form a monolayer.
