Two D.melanogastermicropia elements have been cloned and sequenced, and compared with two Dhyd\micropia elements. A 10bp region within each repeat unit of the 3' tandem repeats is highly conserved, suggesting functional importance either in transposition events, or in regulatory activity on flanking DNA sequences. One of the D.melanogastermicropia elements contains a copia element insertion.
First identified because it hybridizes with a copia-like element found on the Y chromosome of D.hydei. Only one element from D.melanogaster has been studied in detail. The complete sequence of this element has been reported by Lankenau et al.; the map in Lindsley, Zimm, 1992 p. 1104 is taken from this sequence.
