The eight genes comprising the Turandot-related family in D. melanogaster are distributed at three different sites in the genome and encode small peptides that are secreted into the hemolymph. They are all induced under stressful conditions, such as bacterial infection, heat shock, paraquat feeding or exposure to ultraviolet light, suggesting they play a role in stress tolerance.
