Description
Description
Thioredoxins reduce disulfide bonds in other proteins using the two cysteines of their conserved active site (WCGPC). They are kept in a reduced, active form by thioredoxin reductase, TrxR, which converts TrxS[[2]] to Trx(SH)[[2]] using NADPH. Thioredoxins have diverse in vivo functions including protection against oxidative stress, redox modification of other proteins, and as an electron donor for ribonucleotide reductase in DNA synthesis. Some thioredoxins are specific to particular organs or cellular compartments. (Adapted from FBrf0200723 and PMID:23397885.)
Notes on Group

FBrf0200723 reports eleven predicted thioredoxins or thioredoxin-like proteins in D. melanogaster. Seven of these have a 'Thioredoxin' (IPR005746) and/or 'Thioredoxin, conserved site' (IPR017937) InterPro signature, and are included in this group. Two other proteins annotated with IPR017937 (CG5554 and Tmx3) have been added to this group. However, FBrf0200723 notes that only four of these proteins (dhd, Trx-2, TrxT and Txl) have the classical thioredoxin active site WCGPCK.
