General Information
Term intermediate neuronal progenitor ID (Ontology) FBbt:00100738 (Fly Anatomy)
Definition Progeny of a type II neuroblast that can divide asymmetrically to generate ganglion mother cells (and maintain itself) (Bayraktar et al., 2010, Viktorin et al., 2011). Each ganglion mother cell further divides to produce a pair of neurons, glia or mixed neuronal/glial progeny (Bayraktar et al., 2010, Viktorin et al., 2011).[ FlyBase:FBrf0204899 FlyBase:FBrf0207387 FlyBase:FBrf0209927 FlyBase:FBrf0212061 FlyBase:FBrf0214495 ]
Also Known As "intermediate neural progenitor" ; "intermediate progenitor" ; "secondary neuroblast" (for all, see Synonyms field below)
Comment There is heterogeneity regarding the gliogenic potential of the different secondary neuroblasts: some secondary neuroblasts will produce only glia, mixed glial/neuronal clones or only neurons and rarely glia. The glial lineage is located closer to the midline commissural region and more spatially dispersed toward the neuropile than the neuronal cells (Viktorin et al., 2011).
